Bad breath, technically termed “halitosis”, is a very common oral health issue with a number of potential causes. It’s important to know what’s causing your bad breath in order to successfully prevent it.

When a person doesn’t clean their teeth and tongue as often as they should, bacteria and food particles remain in the mouth and fester – and this causes stinky breath. Remember to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes, and don’t skip a day of flossing, either. And always scrape or brush the tongue daily – it’s like a carpet of bacteria!
Dry mouth, otherwise known as xerostomia, is a condition that occurs when saliva is not produced at a normal or adequate rate. This leads to a smelly oral environment because this type of environment encourages and welcomes oral bacteria.
Certain medical conditions such as infections of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal disorders or diabetes are also thought to be contributors to halitosis, recent research shows. A doctor or physician will be able to address and recommend proper treatment for such conditions that may be contributing to your bad breath.
If you smoke, your habit may be to blame for your bad breath. Known as “smoker’s breath”, the smoke particles tend to linger on the tongue and throat, and the only treatment for this would be to quit smoking altogether.
Foods that are notorious for causing bad breath include onions, garlic, fish, spicy foods and coffee. Sugar-free gum or simply avoiding these foods all together is a great way to prevent your breath from smelling at a bad time.
