Say Goodbye To Dental Anxiety

Relieve dental fears and relax during your visit.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

If you have been delaying dental treatment because of anxiety or fear, talk to us about sedation dentistry procedures that can make your visit relaxing and manageable. We offer oral sedation, GA/IV sedation and nitrous oxide to help patients feel more calm and comfortable throughout their procedure. We want to do everything possible to ensure you get the dental treatment you need in a timely manner and may recommend sedation dentistry as part of your treatment plan.

Below are the sedation dentistry methods our Mississauga dentist offers:

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking an anti-anxiety pill before the dental visit. This prescription medication will make you feel drowsy and you will feel relaxed throughout the treatment. You will need someone to drive you home after your visit because it will still take a few hours for the medication to wear off. Most patients end up sleeping for a few hours after their visit so we encourage you to plan accordingly.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”, is a mixture of oxygen and a special sedative administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose. This is a mild form of sedation that helps patients to relax and feel comfortable during their treatment – and often will incite feelings of happiness and “giggles” (hence its name)! Patients experiencing nitrous oxide sedation are still fully conscious, and the effects of the drug wear off as soon as the mask is removed.

I.V. (Moderate/Conscious) Sedation

I.V. (Moderate) sedation is administered intravenously and allows the patient to enter a state of deep relaxation during their dental treatment, also known as a "twilight sleep". Patients often recall little to nothing about their appointment once the drug has worn off!

General Anesthesia

With general anesthesia, the patient will essentially be "put to sleep" for their dental procedure. The sedative is administered intravenously and a trained professional will be there to monitor the patient’s heart rate and breathing. General anesthesia is a great option for patients with severe dental anxiety who would rather not be mentally present during their treatment.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

Nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless gas that patients inhale at a steady rate until they fall into a semi-conscious state. We control the amount of gas administered at any given time so that we can control the depth of sedation. Most patients report feeling extremely relaxed and even euphoric while the gas is turned on. We can perform a variety of dental procedures while you are in this relaxed state and you will return to normal within minutes after the gas has been turned off. Nitrous oxide is a powerful and effective method of sedation for patients with moderate levels of dental anxiety. You will be able to drive yourself home after receiving this type of sedation.
